Peyote cactus

The peyote cactus is a small and spiny cactus that you use if you want to experience a violent trip. This is because the cactus contains the hallucinogenic substance mescaline. This natural substance produces physical and intense mental effects that are in no way inferior to a mushroom trip or LSD trip.

Growing instructions

Germinating peyote (Lophophora williamsii) seeds is a process that requires time and patience, as this cactus species grows slowly. Here are some steps to help you:

  1. Get the right supplies: You will need peyote seeds, along with the cactus soil, small pots or seed containers and a plastic bag or mini greenhouse to maintain proper moisture levels.
  2. Fill the pots or seed containers with the cactus soil mixture and moisten the soil mixture with water.
  3. Spread the peyote seeds evenly on the surface of the soil. Do not cover them with soil as they need light to germinate.
  4. Place the containers in a plastic bag or mini greenhouse to create a humid environment. Do not seal the bag or greenhouse completely as some air circulation is needed.
  5. Place the seeds in a warm place with plenty of indirect sunlight. The ideal temperature for germinating peyote seeds is between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
  6. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Watering is best done by dipping the bottom of the pots in water so that the soil can soak up the water. Too much direct water can wash away the seeds or make them more susceptible to mould.
  7. With the right conditions, seeds can start germinating within a week to a month. Be patient, some seeds may take longer.
  8. Once the seedlings start appearing, keep them in the same humid environment until they are strong enough to survive in less humid conditions.
  9. When the plantlets are a little bigger, you can carefully transplant them to their own pots with cactus soil.

Additional tips for growing peyote:

  • Light: Young peyote cacti need plenty of indirect sunlight, but direct sunlight can be harmful. So provide a location where they get enough light, but protect them from direct sun exposure, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Water: Peyote cacti need good drainage to prevent the roots from rotting. It is important to wait until the soil is completely dry between waterings. In winter, when the plants are dormant, reduce or even stop watering altogether.
  • Temperature: Peyote cacti love heat, but they can also tolerate lower temperatures. They do best at temperatures between 16 and 27 degrees Celsius. However, they can be damaged at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, so it is important to keep them warm in winter.
  • Soil: Use a well-drained soil mixture specially designed for cacti. This allows water to drain easily and prevents the roots from staying wet for too long.
  • Nutrition: Young peyote cacti do not need much fertilizer, but they can benefit from a small amount of cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Repotting: Peyote cacti grow very slowly, so you don't need to repot them very often. It is usually enough to repot them every 2-3 years, or when you notice that the roots start to emerge from the bottom of the pot.
  • Pests and diseases: Peyote cacti can be susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases, including mealybugs, fungal diseases and root rot. It is important to check the plants regularly and address any problems early.
