Enhance the structure of your growing medium with Plagron Perlite. Perlite is a baked volcanic rock that provides a more aerated substrate and improved drainage. Perlite is versatile, maintains consistent quality, is germ-free, and offers the perfect water/air ratio for both cannabis plants and mushrooms. It's no wonder we've included perlite in the Dutch-Headshop product range, and Plagron Perlite carries the RHP quality mark.
- High water and oxygen-holding capacity
- Consistent quality and germ-free
- Provides an ideal water/air ratio
- RHP quality mark
Biological and RHP-certified. The hallmark for a guaranteed clean soil. The RHP quality mark guarantees the quality from raw material to delivery, ensuring risk-free and successful cultivation. RHP is synonymous with high standards for water absorption, air content, and nutrients.
The Role of Perlite in Cannabis Cultivation
Perlite is a valuable addition to cannabis cultivation, primarily due to its ability to improve soil structure and stimulate healthy root growth. It provides a more aerated medium that promotes water flow and oxygen supply to the roots, which is essential for the overall health and growth of cannabis plants.
Additionally, perlite plays a role in efficiently managing water and nutrients by preventing soil compaction. This ensures an optimal balance between water retention and drainage, contributing to a stable supply of water and nutrients to the plant. Due to these properties, perlite is an indispensable element in cannabis cultivation.
Plagron Perlite can also serve as a complete hydrological substrate for cultivation.

Using Perlite in Mushroom Cultivation
Perlite is not only suitable for improving the soil for cannabis plants; it is an indispensable component for growing mushrooms. Perlite plays a crucial role in promoting the growth of mycelium, the root-like network of mushrooms. This volcanic rock, characterized by its lightweight and porous structure, is essential for creating an ideal humidity environment. Perlite is used in grow kits for a reason. It helps retain and gradually release moisture to the environment, ensuring a constant high humidity that is crucial for mycelium growth and development. Additionally, the airy structure of perlite promotes air circulation around the mycelium, helping to prevent unwanted mold and rot caused by stagnant water and insufficient ventilation.
Perlite also plays a role in protecting mycelium from temperature fluctuations. The insulating properties of perlite help maintain a stable ambient temperature, essential for effective mycelium development. This temperature stability is particularly important during the incubation phase of mycelium, where consistent conditions promote even and healthy growth. Whether you are cultivating mushrooms from spores, liquid culture, or from spawn and transitioning to the fruiting phase, adding perlite to the substrate creates an environment where mushrooms can thrive. This means a potential forest of mushrooms above the ground.
Optimal Mushroom Substrate
- Perlite: Approximately 1 part. Use as a base layer for moisture retention and aeration.
- Vermiculite: Approximately 2 parts. Provides aeration and moisture retention.
- Brown rice flour: Approximately 1 part. Serves as a food source for mushrooms. Mix well with vermiculite.
- Water: Enough to moisten the mixture of vermiculite and rice flour, but not soaking wet.
When cultivating mushrooms, ensure that all components are sterile (boil in a pressure cooker for one hour).
