What is Jurema?
Mimosa tenuiflora, also known as jurema preta, tepezcohuite, carbonal, cabrera, or Mimosa hostilis, is a perennial tree or shrub native to northeastern Brazil. It thrives in various ecosystems, including dry and sandy areas and rainforest areas. Mimosa tenuiflora is also found in other parts of South America, such as Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela.
The tree can grow up to 8-15 metres tall and has distinctive, fern-like leaves. However, it is the inner root bark of Mimosa tenuiflora that is of great interest because of its traditional and contemporary uses. Jurema root bark contains the fascinating psychedelic compound DMT (dimethyltryptamine). This naturally occurring psychedelic compound has been used for centuries in traditional shamanic practices for its visionary and healing properties. Mimosa tenuiflora root bark has received much attention from enthusiasts and researchers alike for its profound effects on consciousness and potential therapeutic applications.
This root bark contains 1 to 1.7% N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Other alkaloids in Jurema are 2-methylcarboline, 5-hydroxytryptamine and yuremamine.
What is DMT?
This plant contains as an active ingredient the substance DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine). DMT is a naturally occurring substance that can also be found in our own bodies. DMT is not active after oral ingestion, as it is immediately broken down by enzymes in the liver. (Synthesised) pure DMT is also smoked to experience a short-lived (20 minutes) but incredibly intense trip. DMT is illegal in many countries. In contrast, plants that contain relatively high amounts of DMT, such as chacruna, are legally available in many countries. These plants cannot in themselves cause a trip - that requires a so-called MAOI. This is often another plant or plant extract that prevents DMT from being broken down directly and does have psychoactive effects.
Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is made from at least two different plants. One with DMT and one with an MAOI to ensure that DMT once ingested is not immediately broken down by our bodies. As a result, DMT remains on receptors in the brain and causes a highly visual psychedelic trip that can last all night.
Anahuasca
"Anahuasca" is a combination of the words "ayahausca" and "analogue", referring to a variation on ayahuasca. This involves replacing the traditional plants that contain MAOIs and DMT with other plants or extracts that contain the same. In fact, there are many more natural sources to make ayahuasca. But beware; the concentration varies greatly from plant to plant and, moreover, plants can contain other psychedelic substances besides the main ingredients.
Use
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to tell you how to make ayahausca. After all, that is not legal. You will have to turn to user experiences you can find elsewhere on the internet. But beware, ayahuasca is definitely not like magic mushrooms. It takes much longer and vomiting and uncontrolled diarrhoea are the norm rather than the exception. We also think it's very important to advise you on setting - don't use psychedelic natural products at a crowded party, on the street or with people you don't trust. Make sure a sober tripsitter is present with you.
