As he tries to wake up from his dream, he meets many interesting people along the way who tell him more about life's questions and mysteries. The film looks trippy when you are sober. When you are tripping on magic mushrooms, it is completely out of this world.

Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle is one of the gems for fans of anime. This Japanese animation film is based on a book of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones. You follow the story of Sophie, a young hatter who is turned into an old woman by a witch and cursed. In the fictional kingdom, she searches for a solution. She encounters Howl, who battles the king with his walking castle. The trippy drawing style and absurd events make this a great film to watch while tripping.

The Midnight Gospel

Do you find the average Disney film too intense while tripping? Do all those colours and visuals quickly become too much for you? Then The Midnight Gospel is not a great idea. In this animated series, a funny little man called Clancy Gilroy takes you on an adventure every episode through a dimension called the Chromatic Ribbon. His caravan contains a multiverse simulator that takes him to bizarre worlds full of trippy inhabitants. There he interviews people for his space podcast. These interviews are based on real interviews of Duncan Trussel with, among others, Phil Hendrie, Stephen Root and Drew Pinsky. Besides the fact that the colours in The Midnight Gospel will pop out of your screen, you can learn a lot from the series. Besides funny and comical events, Clancy and other characters tell you a lot about life. This brain-teaser is one of our favourites. It seems as if it was made for it. You just have to see it!

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

Do you feel connected to the earth while tripping? Does the starry sky look so beautiful to you after eating a bowl of magic mushrooms? Take out your telescope and put on the series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. In this documentary, Neil deGrasse Tyson takes you through the entire cosmos in his Ship of the Imagination. In each episode, you learn about every corner of the universe based on scientific research. The feeling is difficult to describe, but while watching this series you realize that you are only a very small curious part in a truly GIGANTIC universe. Put your chair next to the window so that you can look at the stars and let Neil deGrasse Tyson enchant you. By the way, do you want the authentic experience? You can put it on as a background and play your own trippy music, but the music from the film is also beautiful. It took no less than five years to make the film. It was shot in 100 different locations in 25 countries. You explore the wonders of the world in all sorts of places and search for the spirituality of mankind. Let's stick to nature images for a moment. If you love the ocean as much as we do, you must have seen Océans. Turn off the lights and turn on your TV. Your whole room is coloured blue during this documentary, so it seems like you are swimming in the ocean yourself. So get out your snorkel. You will see images of all five oceans on earth. The biggest, most mysterious and beautiful fish pass by. Océans also wakes you up. The ecological drama film tells you about the disappearing wonders of the underwater world. So pay close attention.

Enter The Void

This 2006 drama/thriller is, according to some, one of the best psychedelic movies ever made. Brace yourself for this hallucinogenic trip film. If it gets too intense, you might want to pause it. Enter The Void follows drug dealer Oscar and stripper Linda. During a police raid, Oscar is hit by a bullet. He is in danger of dying, but his soul thinks differently. Because he promised to always be there for his sister, his soul does not want to leave the living world. In this trippy movie, you follow Oscar's soul. As the two-and-a-half-hour film progresses, it becomes more and more exciting and chaotic. Time lines get mixed up and your brain is put to the test. Make sure there is a trip sitter around.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Of course, the mother of trippy films cannot be missing from this list. Especially the older generation will know this film. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is about a journey of a strange journalist and his crazy lawyer to Las Vegas. Brace yourself for the comical, strange, psychedelic adventures of these two geeks. Know your classics. This is a must see.

Terence McKenna's True Hallucinations

Terence McKenna is one of the key figures in psychedelics. In our smart shop you can even buy a magic mushrooms grow kit named after him. No wonder a trippy movie was made about him. Terence McKenna's True Hallucinations is a documentary about McKenna's adventures in the Amazon. The ideas that arise from his trip result in an eschatological theory about time. An award-winning but trippy animated anthology series is Love, Death & Robots. Made by Tim Miller with David Fincher as executive producer. The series contains all short, animated episodes, each with its own story. A bit like Black Mirror, but animated. After watching some episodes, you won't understand a thing. You get completely carried away in the peculiar science fiction stories. Expect a mix of fantasy, comedy, horror and much more. Sit back and relax.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar is one of the best known and most awarded anime series. What many people don't know is that it is incredibly trippy to watch when you are on psychedelics. 

A world is divided into four nations. The water tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nation. Only the Avatar, the master of all four elements, can bring balance back to this world. The Avatar disappears, but after 100 years Katara and Sokka find the new Avatar: Aang. He is the only one to master all four elements and can control fire, earth, water and air. At least, that is something he still has to learn. The story follows Aang's adventures in a war-torn world filled with magic and dangerous, mysterious characters. The way Avatar: The Last Airbender is drawn, it makes for a great trip. Our tip: Put on some good music and chill out on the couch. Because sometimes you want to watch something, follow the stories of Aang while you do it.

Son of the White Mare

This animated fantasy film from 1981 is a great piece of trippy drawing. This Hungarian folk myth is about a horse goddess who gives birth to three powerful brothers. She sends her sons into the underworld to rescue three princesses from the hands of evil dragons. Only then can they regain the lost kingdom of their ancestors. Just watch the trailer. That's all we have to say.

The Trip

The Trip is a psychedelic movie by definition. You follow Paul Groves, a TV advertising director. His wife has left him and he is in the middle of a personality crisis. His friend John is a big fan of LSD. Paul wants to experience tripping on LSD and asks John to be his trip-sitter. Paul ends up in a freak-out and gets all sorts of hallucinations and visions about sex, death, crazy witches, torture chambers and dwarves. If you are tripping, you will laugh your balls off. This classic from 1967 guarantees a laughing fit. Make sure John is not your trip sitter that night.

Fantasia

An animated masterpiece from 1940 is, of course, Fantasia. This Disney classic is beyond spacy if you are on magic mushrooms or truffles. The magic drips from your screen. Mickey Mouse performs all kinds of tricks as a magician. You see animated images of well-known Western classical music. Fantasia works very well as background images while you are listening to music.

Rick & Morty

Looking for a series that will make you laugh? Go for Rick & Morty. One of the best rated animated series in the world is about the wacky Grandpa Rick and his family. He is a super scientist who is famous and infamous in every corner of the universe. Every episode he takes his slightly less clever grandson Morty on an adventure. If you think you've seen the craziest things, sit back and watch. The crazy adventures of these two bosses, in combination with the incredibly trippy drawing style, guarantees a laugh on psychedelics. Disclaimer: you have to be able to cope with an abundance of stimuli. Take a short break after each episode!

A Scanner Darkly

With some psychedelic movies you just think it was made for watching during a trip. This is also the case with A Scanner Darkly. This chunky science fiction, crime, drama, mystery thriller is a masterpiece for trippers. An undercover detective named Bob Arctor lives in a totalitarian society not far into our future. He tries to track down the major distributors of a dangerous new drug, Substance D, with the help of a few junkies. Bob gets caught up in his own thoughts and begins to lose his identity. They then start testing him to check his mental state. The vaguely GTA-like drawing style keeps you entertained throughout the film. With stars such as Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr., definitely not a third-rate feature film. Highly recommended!

The NeverEnding Story

You may be thinking, "huh, what is this classic doing in a list of trippy movies." Well, The NeverEnding Story is definitely not to be missed either. A little boy named Bastian is given a book by its mysterious owner in an old shop. It would be dangerous to read it, but he does so anyway. It is not only dangerous, we know afterwards. The crazy figures in the book and Bastian's imagination are incredibly trippy. The mythical world he lands in is crazy and the characters he meets are even crazier. Bastian and his spacy flying dragon/dog are going to save the world. It's an old film, so don't expect high-end editing or special effects. More like moving dolls. This fantasy film from 1984 is nevertheless a top 25 trippy film.

Spirited Away: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi

This award-winning animated film is about Chihiro Ogino and her parents Akio and Yuko. To Chihiro's discontent, they move to a small Japanese town in the countryside. On their way there, they stumble upon an abandoned amusement park, where Chihiro goes to investigate. She meets Haku, who tells her that her parents are in danger. When she returns, her parents have turned into pigs and the amusement park is inhabited by trippy demons, ghosts, gods and the evil witch Yubaba. Immerse yourself in this fantastic fantasy adventure film in which Chihiro makes friends with all sorts of crazy Pokémon-like creatures. Award-winning film. It's an entertaining film without the trip, but Spirited Away: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakush is a great treat with a bowl of magic mushroom soup!

The Holy Mountain

We will finish with two classics that simply cannot be missed. They are old films, but don't let that put you off. Seasoned psychonauts will surely have seen it once. They all speak highly of it. When you're at your peak, you should put one of these on. 

The Holy Mountain is a surrealistic film with references to mysterious things in the world. In this trippy movie, you follow a strange Christian character who stumbles upon bizarre places full of trippy, religious and sacrilegious images. His mysterious guide introduces him to 7 rich and powerful people. They each represent a planet in the solar system. The protagonist, the gods, his guide and assistant put away all worldly things and go in search of The Holy Mountain. They are going to expel the gods who live there and want to become immortal. The film contains many trippy scenes. Pay attention because there are some clear messages in there that will get you thinking. The Holy Mountain is known as one of the best trip films.

La Planète Sauvage / Fantastic Planet

La Planète Sauvage is an insane animation science fiction film from 1973. In the distant world of Ygam, the giant and mostly trippy blue alien Draags is in charge. All sorts of trippy slaves, masters and very, very vague creatures also live there. In the film you follow Terr, a humanoid Om Slave of Draags. He escapes with a device that allows Draags to make intellectual progress. Along the way, he finds other Om Slaves who will help him defeat the big bad alien. In just over an hour, you follow the rebellion. Try to understand something of it. This strange masterpiece is perhaps the most trippy piece of filmmaking we've ever seen. Just completely insane. Just watch the trailer for Fantastic Planet / La Planète Sauvage. It says it all.
