How much does cannabis cost abroad?

Growing your own cannabis seeds is the cheapest way to get cannabis. Unfortunately, this is not an option everywhere in the world. Also, buying cannabis in a coffeeshop, cannabis club, or on prescription is not possible for everyone. Still, cannabis is smoked all over the world, and people manage to get cannabis somehow. At Dutch-Headshop, we wondered what people actually pay on average for a gram of cannabis worldwide.

How much does a gram of cannabis cost in the Netherlands?

Of course, we advise against buying cannabis illegally if it is not allowed where you live. In the Netherlands, the home base of Dutch-Headshop, the purchase of cannabis is tolerated. For this reason, it is possible in different parts of our country to compare the prices and quality of cannabis. The average price paid for a standard gram of cannabis here is 10 euros. Naturally, there are outliers for low-quality buds or prestigious cup winners.

These places have the most expensive cannabis

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime, internationally known as UNODC, deals with the details of drug sales, among other things. Part of this research concerns the price and use of cannabis in different places around the world. It is important to note that no distinction is made between the quality or forms of cannabis. The following figures come from a publication of this research.

Ouch! Suddenly, that ten euros per gram doesn't seem so bad. It immediately stands out that most cities on this list are located in Asia. The fact that cannabis is mostly illegal there certainly doesn't help the price per gram.

This is what we expect at a minimum for a gram of cannabis costing 30 euros!

Where can you buy the cheapest cannabis?

Now that you have seen where the price of cannabis lightens your wallet the fastest, you are probably also curious where a gram is sold for a pittance. Many cities on this list are located in a tropical climate. This means little temperature difference between the seasons and generally warm and humid weather. Cannabis feels most at home in these (sub)tropical areas around the equator. It is therefore easier to keep costs low since no grow lights, ventilation etc. are needed. Perhaps this favorable climate thus contributes to the low price of cannabis.

Another striking fact is that in a city like Jakarta, where smoking a joint can mean a one-way ticket to prison, the price per gram is still very low. Large-scale cannabis cultivation in Indonesia can even mean the death penalty. Not only cannabis, but also CBD and hemp are completely illegal there.

Where is the most cannabis smoked?

Hopefully, you now have a better idea of where the price of cannabis is extremely high or very low. But where are they actually the champions of cannabis smoking? The following list shows in which cities the most cannabis is consumed. Note, however, that this is the total consumption in kilos per year, without considering the number of inhabitants or the size of the cities.
